Here lies the tragedy of a man who resolved to sacrifice his own brother to unleash unto the world a great power to slay the daemons, beings manifested from creatures who’s inner darkness and impurity overpowers them, that plague the world and bring everlasting peace.
But on the other side, we have a woman consumed by grief at the loss of her brother and, swearing absolute revenge on his killer, becomes a daemon whose only purpose in life is to kill him and will not allow anyone to block her path to slaughter.

Tales of Berseria is the 16th mothership title in the Tales series by Bandai Namco. It is distantly related to Zestiria but you really don’t need to play the previous game to understand this game’s story. Mostly background lore ties the two games together as well as a certain blonde character that is related to a character in Zestiria.
The story is about a young woman named Velvet, who was living an otherwise ordinary life has her entire world crashing down when her older brother Artorius sacrifices their younger brother Laphicet in order to draw upon his latent power to unlock a seal that contains a great power that later allows him to slay the daemons and bring relative peace and hope to the world, whereas conventional weapons cannot damage these daemons.
She swears revenge on Artorius and begins a blood feud with him.
Velvet is imprisoned afterwards for a few years while she consumes other daemons to survive but eventually she obtains an opportunity and escapes the island prison she is held in.

The battle system is very similar to Zestiria and Graces f in that you have a regenerating battle “currency” I would call it to perform Artes for your characters.
Berseria’s version of it is called Soul Gauge (SG) where you are given three of those blue icons next to your character portrait with a potential maximum of five per battle.
The number determines how many attacks you can combo at once but you are also limited by how much SG they deplete. You can technically keep attacking after the SG is depleted but all of them will be easily blocked.
To remedy this, another system called Break Soul (BS) is introduced where you can consume a Soul to bypass this combo limitation and put you into a mode called “Theorionized” where your HP is constantly draining but you get special unique moves and status buffs based on the enemy type you used your BS on.
Another remedy for this is you gain Souls when you defeat an enemy. You also gain them when you dodge your enemy’s attack at the last second, dropping Souls onto the field to build back up your gauge.
So the battle system basically revolves around Break Soul and dodging for the consuming/replenishing of your Souls.
